How We Calculate the Number of Seals Killed
During the course of this year's commercial seal hunt in Canada, the Canadian government will allow sealers to slaughter up to 280,000 harp seals. We are updating our counter daily based on Canadian government data and historic kill levels.
The rate of slaughter will vary over the course of the hunt as different areas are opened and closed for hunting.
NOTE: The "Seals Killed" counter is an estimate based on the quota, government data, and historic rates of killing. While it is a good estimate, it may not provide an entirely accurate number of seals killed each day in 2009, which may be higher or lower than our counter suggests. The actual total number of seals who will be slaughtered this year remains to be seen.
