People are the reason for the Canadian seal hunt, and people will be the ones who eventually stop it. The key will be education, and that's why The Humane Society of the United States filed daily reports from the first stage of the 2005 seal hunt in northeastern Canada.
Led by veteran seal hunt observer, Rebecca Aldworth, our director of Canadian Wildlife Issues, The HSUS sent a team of videographers, writers, and observers to the ice floes to document the butchery that unfolded.
What we reported wasn't always pretty. But it was necessary. It was—and continues to be—necessary to document, disseminate, and cast doubt on the very motives behind this wide-scale massacre of harp seals. The goal is education that leads to enlightenment that leads to action that leads to ending the sealing industry in Canada.
Together, we'll end the seal hunt forever.
