The HSUS is involved in more than three dozen active animal and environmental protection cases throughout the country, including actions to protect whales, dolphins, manatees, and other wildlife, to improve the treatment of performing animals and animals used in research, and to prevent the systematic mistreatment of animals in factory farms.

Pro Bono Representation
The Animal Protection Litigation Section has numerous opportunities for law firms and attorneys to provide pro bono assistance on animal protection cases. With over three dozen active animal and environmental protection cases throughout the country, we can pair attorneys with projects that fit both their interest and our litigation needs. If you are interested in volunteering your pro bono services, sign up to be a part of the Animal Protection Litigation program.
Legal Clerkships
Law clerks work closely with Animal Protection Litigation Section attorneys and are integrally involved in the process of researching, preparing, and prosecuting animal protection lawsuits in state and federal court. Our clerks get valuable exposure to a wide variety of animal protection cases in state and federal court—from preventing the systematic mistreatment of animals in factory farms to defending threatened and endangered species from sport hunting.
Law clerks may work full or part time, and can arrange to receive course credit. Sign up to learn more about the Animal Protection Litigation program's legal clerkships.
Litigation Fellowships
Litigation fellows develop and implement new precedent-setting legal campaigns on behalf of animals, and provide advice on legislation, initiatives and other matters.
Candidates for one-year litigation fellowships must have their J.D., excellent legal writing and research skills, and no more than two years' legal experience. While some background in animal protection or environmental law is desired, we are primarily interested in hiring fellows that are professional, innovative, and who will be a strong advocate for animals.
