You've Got the Power: The New HSUS Guide to Vegetarian Eating

July 22, 2005

"We are creatures of conscience, and each one of us has the power to turn away from the cruelties of the modern factory farm."

Wayne Pacelle, The HSUS President and CEO, from the introduction to the HSUS Guide to Vegetarian Eating

Have you ever considered taking steps toward vegetarian eating?

If you answered yes, you should know that the simplest of daily choices—shopping at the grocery store or ordering lunch at the corner deli—can be a powerful way for individuals to create a more humane society. If you think vegetarian eating might be a lifestyle—and advocacy—choice for you, The HSUS now has a guide available to help you find your footing in new terrain.

The HSUS has long used the "three R's" (Reduce, Refine, Replace) as a model for helping animals through individual daily food choices. Any reduction in the amount of animal products you consume will in turn reduce the suffering of animals used for food. Refining your food choices, such as avoiding the most abusive animal products, including battery cage eggs, veal, and foie gras, also improves the lot of farm animals. And finally, replacing meat, eggs, and dairy products with delicious plant-based alternatives directly translates your compassion into an animal-friendly meal.

Published in July 2005, the new HSUS Guide to Vegetarian Eating leads the way as you take your own steps, using any of the three R's, to help animals. Whether you’re interested in reducing your consumption of animal products or transitioning to a completely vegetarian diet, the guide has everything you need.

"Each one of us has the power to reduce animal suffering every time we sit down to eat," says Paul Shapiro, factory farming campaign manager with The HSUS. "This guide demonstrates that opting for more humane food choices has never been easier."

In the guide, HSUS staffers pass along all their favorite recipes to you (and your taste buds)—from pancakes to potato salad, sun-dried tomato pistachio spread to spicy peanut noodles. You'll be sure to find something tempting and easy to fix, whether you're looking for sandwich fillings, hearty entrees, or decadent desserts. For inspiration, the guide includes letters to you from some of The HSUS staff, sharing their thoughts on the impact of vegetarian eating, and on how making new food choices has empowered them in their quest to help animals.

"When I first became a vegetarian, I felt very isolated," recalls Nancy Perry, vice president of government affairs with The HSUS, in the Guide to Vegetarian Eating. "So I sought out anyone and everyone who could support me. I kept learning about animal issues. Not only did my self-education keep me inspired, but it helped me share my commitment to reducing the suffering of animals with my friends and colleagues."

The 24-page guide contains:

» Sample meal plans

» Nutrition tips

» Original recipes

» Suggestions for an easy switch to vegetarian eating

» Lists of new products you might want to try

The guide also provides food for thought: information about factory farming and its toll on animals, the environment, and our health. The guide is free, so help yourself—and the animals—and tell your friends and family about this new resource.

"Every person can make a difference every time he or she makes food choices...One person can lead by example and be an ambassador for the animals who can't speak for themselves."

Michael Markarian, The HSUS Executive Vice President, External Affairs, from the Guide to Vegetarian Eating
