In February 2004, The HSUS convened a group of international experts for a three-day workshop with a goals of elucidating the current state of knowledge within the scientific community on animal distress, identifying whether it is possible to define and measure distress in operational terms and determining how to practically recognize, assess, and alleviate distress in the laboratory. The workshop highlighted the current status of knowledge of animal distress, especially in the laboratory animal science and animal research arenas.
Briefing papers from this workshop and chapters written by well-reputed scientists detailing the practical process of recognizing, assessing and alleviating pain and distress in animal research and testing are being compiled into a book entitled Recognition and Alleviation of Pain and Distress in Animal Research: Concepts, Measurement and Practical Implications. This publication will prove valuable for veterinarians, technicians, and researchers, as well as regulatory authorities, Institutional Animal Care and Use Committees or comparable bodies outside of the United States, and the interested public. If you would like to be contacted when this publication is released, please email The HSUS at ari@humanesociety.org.
