About the Map
Twelve to thirteen hundred (1,200-1,300) chimpanzees remain in 10 laboratories throughout the United States. A majority are housed in facilities that conduct invasive research or make chimpanzees available for invasive research. Those that provide chimpanzees for research keep the chimpanzees in what are essentially "warehouses" until they are requested for use at a laboratory. There is one facility that does not warehouse chimpanzees and conducts only noninvasive cognitive research.
Over 500 chimpanzees have been retired from research in the US and reside in 10 sanctuaries located in the United States and Canada. (There are no chimpanzee laboratories located in Canada).

Notes and Disclaimer
NOTE: There are additional chimpanzee sanctuaries located in the U.S. This map shows only those sanctuaries with chimpanzees formerly used in research. If you know of a sanctuary that isn't listed here but has chimpanzees formerly used in research, please contact us at chimpsdeservebetter@hsus.org
NOTE: Numbers of chimpanzees in laboratories are approximate. It is difficult to determine the exact numbers as up-to-date numbers are not made readily available by the facilities.
Disclaimer: Facilities on this map labeled "sanctuary" are self-described sanctuaries and their presence on this map does not indicate an endorsement by The HSUS.
