The Southeast Regional Office of The Humane Society of the United States, located in Tallahassee, Fla., serves the animals and people of five states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, and South Carolina.
Opened in 1983, SERO focuses its efforts on the promotion of pro-animal legislation, disaster planning and response, assistance to animal shelters (both animal control and humane facilities), guidance to law enforcement or humane agents on cruelty investigations, the protection of wildlife, and a variety of other issues. Our office has been very active since Hurricane Andrew, in 1992, in the promotion of disaster planning for animals on the local, community, and state levels. More recently, we worked with Georgia in developing its plan for animal-friendly evacuation shelters by conducting workshops all over that state. After the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, SERO staff worked with officials in Florida on the state's terrorism plan for animals.
Other high-profile issues include improving the laws against dog- and cockfighting and the lack of federal and Florida state protections for the endangered manatee. Twice a year, the office produces the newsletter SERO Regional News to keep HSUS members in our states up-to-date on our legislative activities, cruelty investigations, upcoming workshops and seminars, and other vital matters.
