Giving Animal Issues a Starring Role in Hollywood
The Humane Society of the United States is the only animal protection organization with a Hollywood office devoted to encouraging and honoring the influential news and entertainment media. Working with compassionate celebrities, writers, filmmakers and producers, we strive to activate the power of the media in our quest for a humane society. Through the annual Genesis Awards recognized as the nation's premier consciousness raiser of animal issues, and our Animal Content in Entertainment (ACE) program, we help put animal protection concerns in the Hollywood picture.

"FOOD, Inc." explores pressing issues in industrial food production. © Participant Media | Want to know where your food really comes from? Opening in N.Y.C., L.A., and S.F. on Friday, June 12, “Food, Inc.” will change the way America thinks about food permanently. This exciting new documentary from the filmmakers behind “Darfur Now” and “An Inconvenient Truth” takes an stark look at how massive factory farms in America abuse the billions of animals raised and killed for food annually, documenting many of the inhumane conditions and illustrating how these farms contribute to global warming and threaten human health.
“The way we eat has changed more in the last 50 years than the previous 10,000,” says author Michael Pollan, who’s written extensively about food for such venerable institutions as The New York Times and appears in the film along with acclaimed writer Eric Schlosser (“Fast Food Nation”). “A lot of it is hard to watch, but I think people are ready to take a good, unflinching look at how their food is produced.” The HSUS was pleased to team up with California Senate Majority Leader Dean Florez to host a screening in Sacramento. With June 21st - Father’s Day - just around the corner, here’s your chance to get a great gift for Dad (or yourself, for that matter) and help animals, too! CharityFolks.com is providing HSUS members an opportunity to indulge in some retail therapy in a socially conscious way via an on-line charity auction. This auction, running June 1 - June 10, offers golf packages, sports packages, bartending lessons, poker lessons, a chance to perform at The Laugh Factory in Hollywood, and more! All items were donated to The HSUS with 100% of the proceeds to benefit the launching of our “End Dogfighting” program in Los Angeles. "End Dogfighting" has already transformed neighborhoods in Chicago by educating “at risk” youths to regard their pit bulls as beloved companions, rather than lethal weapons. It also draws these youths away from illegal activities, such as drug trafficking, associated with the barbaric blood sport of dogfighting. The HSUS is determined to take the program to L.A., but it needs your help! Click here to check out the list of items and start bidding.
You can also make a tax-deductible gift on-line here towards the program launch.

It was all in for the animals — and for underserved youths — when supporters of The HSUS gathered in the Hollywood Hills on Saturday, May 9 for “Casino Royale: Playing for Change.” An evening of casino games and a celebrity poker tournament, it marked the kick off of a campaign to bring The HSUS’s “End Dogfighting” program to Los Angeles, where the blood sport has reached epidemic proportion.
"End Dogfighting" is a unique grassroots program that strives to stop dogfighting before it starts – by teaching “at risk” youths to regard their pit bulls as friends -- not fighters.
