LEGAL CLERKSHIPS, Animal Protection Litigation
Seeking several conscientious law students for unpaid Fall 2008 and Spring 2009 legal clerkships within the Animal Protection Litigation Section in our Washington, D.C. office. Law clerks will work closely with attorneys and be integrally involved in the process of researching, preparing and prosecuting animal protection lawsuits in state and federal courts. Law clerks must have excellent legal writing and research skills. Although experience in animal protection and/or environmental law is preferred, we are primarily interested in working with students who are resourceful, innovative and productive, and who have a strong interest in animal protection litigation. INTERNS, Humane Society International The Humane Society International is the international arm of the Humane Society of the United States. Our global work addresses an array of issues including humane animal control, farm animal and companion animal welfare. HSI works with national and jurisdictional governments, humane organizations, and individual animal protectionists to find practical, culturally sensitive, and long-term solutions to common animal problems. HSI-Programs is seeking interns to assist us with our program work. STATE DIRECTOR, Field Services, Mississippi This position operates from an in-home office under the supervision of the South East Regional Office and carries out national and state agendas and priorities within state to which assigned. Help plan, develop, and implement strategies to carry out assigned national and state agendas, state and federal legislative priorities, and campaigns in assigned state. Assess state needs and make recommendations to supervisor. Advance state and federal legislative priorities and track and monitor all legislation in assigned state in concert with region and government affairs sections. Initiate and respond to media requests relating to legislation, cruelty, and other animal protection issues in concert with HSUS public relations staff (write op-ed pieces and press releases as necessary, give media interviews, maintain relationship with editorial boards and local media). Work with animal care and control agencies, humane officers, and humane societies throughout the state to establish a cooperative network. Maintain HSUS presence and influence through memberships on federation and association boards. Promote their assistance with legislative and animal protection goals. Extensive travel is required. MANAGER, Walk for the Animals
The Humane Society of the United States is seeking an events and fundraising professional to plan and implement annual walk event in DC in conjunction with local shelter partners. Responsibilities include coordination with other HSUS departments to secure sponsors, maintaining walk website and e-mail messaging campaigns, obtaining publicity for events, and managing on-site Walk event details. Also responsible for working with shelters in other cities to expand walk and assisting department with other HSUS events. Bachelors degree in related subject preferred. Minimum one year experience in special events, fundraising environment. Knowledge of and interest in animal welfare issues preferred. This position is located in Gaithersburg. Salary in the mid-$30s.

The Humane Society of the United States is seeking a Manager for Member Benefits and Services to assist the Chief Innovations Officer in the research, development, and implementation of a sophisticated marketing, service, and benefits package of the Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association (HSVMA). Essential responsibilities include managing mail and solicitation campaign, developing and implementing member field service program in collaboration with the Vice President of Field Services; responding to mail and email inquiries, comments, and suggestions; coordinating HSVMA programs and activities with the Director of Field Services and Director of Advocacy; managing the Leadership Council Program; and researching and managing Continuing Education and Insurance Benefits Program. RECEPTIONIST, Membership and Customer Loyalty
The Humane Society of the United States is seeking a Receptionist to manage our main switchboard with 250 phone lines for all three metro area offices. This individual would also be responsible for overseeing the visitor process for Gaithersburg, MD office, directing incoming mail to the appropriate internal department, and coordinating additional functions at the front desk to ensure smooth internal operations. Other duties include monitoring the security screens as needed for the receiving area, administering new visitor badge system, and updating and maintaining Reception Manual/Directory. This position requires one year's experience in managing a switchboard of comparable size, demonstrated customer service skills which include the ability to communicate professionally in person and in writing, professional demeanor including being both reliable and punctual, proficient in Microsoft applications: Word, Excel, and Outlook, and must have excellent organizational skills. PUBLIC RELATIONS INTERN, Public Relations
The Humane Society of the United States, the nation's largest animal protection organization, seeks interns for its public relations department for the 2008-2009 academic year. Interns can serve for the fall or spring semester or both. Interns will assist public relations staff with representing the organization to reporters and media. As an HSUS public relations intern, you will have the opportunity to draft and distribute press releases, help organize media events, handle incoming media inquiries, and pitch stories. Preferred applicants are pursing a degree in public relations, journalism, communications, political science or related field. Minimum time commitment required of 10 hours per week.
